Painting Lucy Scrolling: A Blue Crow by the Sea

Painting Lucy Scrolling: A Blue Crow by the Sea

Some paintings arrive quickly, while others unfold in layers—sketch, color, detail, revision—

until the final image emerges. Lucy Scrolling began as a simple pencil outline on canvas: the suggestion of a bird, a sofa, a window, and a vase of flowers. From there, I blocked in bold colors—deep blues, warm pinks, and sunny yellows—laying the groundwork for a cheerful, coastal interior.

The star of the piece, of course, is Lucy: a bright blue crow perched on a red chair, smartphone in hand, pearl necklace gleaming. Behind her, the ocean horizon glows through a wide window, framed by patterned curtains. A green mug and vase of flowers complete the cozy New England–style setting, creating a mix of whimsy and comfort.

I loved watching Lucy come to life as I layered details, from

the tilt of her beak to the rhythm of the patterned pillows. She feels both at home and a little mischievous, scrolling through her own thoughts against the calm sea view.

This piece sold at the Creative Arts Center in Chatham, and it has inspired me to continue exploring a whole series of blue crow paintings. Lucy is only the beginning.
