Finding My Tribe: Painting with Ed Chesnovich’s Groovy Painting Tribe

Every Wednesday afternoon (except for summer), I head to the Cape Cod Art Center in Barnstable for something that has become one of the most meaningful parts of my artistic practice: Ed Chesnovich’s Groovy Painting Tribe.

For three hours, a group of painters—some seasoned professionals, others just beginning—gather with their brushes, paints, and canvases. Ed, whose gorgeous work is a huge inspiration for me,  presides over it all with his signature mix of humor, encouragement, and creative energy. He offers optional prompts to shake things up—paint entirely in black and white, try a piece inspired by a new Benjamin Moore palette, or take on another playful challenge. You don’t have to follow the exercise, but it’s often the spark that gets ideas flowing.

The atmosphere is both relaxed and inspiring: music playing, snacks passed around, and a genuine sense of camaraderie. The work ranges from landscapes to abstractions, from traditional to experimental, but what ties it all together is the supportive environment.

This class has contributed so much to my development as an artist. It keeps me painting consistently, pushes me out of my comfort zone, and reminds me that making art is not just a solitary pursuit—it can also be joyful, social, and groovy.
